hitting hard

June 27, 2006

i attended my old university publication’s General Assembley yesterday with the perverse excitement of getting to meet the new staff and experience once again the homey atmosphere of the organization that has sheltered me, molded me and matured me into the person that i am now. although dog tired and sick from work, i forced myself to go there because i want to believe that my advise is needed, not because i am an alumni of the publication or because i am more learned, but because my heart is still with it.

i expected a few bumps in the meeting because of a certain issue that needed to be addressed. what i didn’t expect is that there’s more than one issue. i was not prepared with what i found out.

the moment i entered the office that used to be my second home during my college days, i felt tension in the air…tension so thick that one can smell it. i was met by several smiles, a hug or too and a number of blank stares from what i assumed were the new guys. i was tired, but my energy immediately zapped to the highest level…the way being with the people of the publication made me always feel for the past years that ive been with them. its like having a dozen uppers for free. i tell you, being inside w&b’s office just gives you the happiest feeling, like warm hugs….that was before…it seems the million free hugs floating amongst the old stacks of previous issues have disappeared…along with the laughter and friendship…

and the passion…oh yes, we had passion then…because we do not only write, we make the studentry believe that we can be their voice…and if the students believe that you can be their voice, then that’s far more glorious than a byline.

i am not saying that the current staff does not have any of that. of course they have the passion to write, but how about the passion to serve? the dedication to be 100% effective for the publication? are they conscious of the items they write, technically speaking? does the paper still have quality? do the students still want them to be their voice?

more importantly, do the students still believe in them? trust them?

i am not one to compare. but we cannot blame the students if they expect more from the staff. because like i said, they depend on the publication. they depend on it and its staff to voice out their ills, their needs…never must w&b fall short of that.

its a legacy. it is being carried from one w&b generation to another in hope that the future generations will not falter. yes, time changes but never the goal, its there and it should remain. yes, challenges hinder us from doing what we are supposed to do, but it must be used to strenghthen the want to achieve the goal and must never be used as a reason to give up. only the weak fail, only cowards give up…only those without wisdom will face no future…and only those without a heart will never seek happiness.

we use both mind and heart to write…and we write to make a change.

the glory of the byline is never a crown, making way for change is the real treasure.

we write because we choose to, not because we should.
